This month of July has been very different from what we had in all these past years. The weather was very changeable, sometimes very dry and hot, other days very windy. The food in the bay was not too much either so we ended up having a very small sample of minke whale and white-beaked dolphin sightings.
However, from 1st July to 31st July 2012 18 minke whales, 27 white-beaked dolphins were photographed and identified. Among them, 6 minke whales and 14 white-beaked dolphin have been already identified from previous years.
Here we want to present the re-sighted animals to you and tell you a little about each individual sighting history, as well as showing you some of the best photos which were taken by the research team this past month.

The month of June has always been a changing one. Some years it would be great and others it would be quite. This year it was a very rich of surprises. First few humpbacks were sighted (we all thought that after May we would not have the chance to see them that much again), the minkes started showing their surface feeding manoeuvres (the Resight Guy gave us one unforgettable tour on 11th when it displayed lunges and oblique lunges for almost all our tour). Some of the closest encounter with the white-beaked dolphins tool place this month, as it is proven by one of our best photos of the month.
From 1st June to 30st June 2012 50 minke whales, 24 white-beaked dolphins were photographed and identified. Among them, 15 minke whales and 9 white-beaked dolphin have been already identified from previous years.

A second month has passed and more data have been collected. The number of minke whales in the bay has been steadily increasing and more of the individual whales that we know since years have been sighted again in the bay. It was so amazing to see Donut coming back again, The Resight Guy, and all the others. It is always a joy to see that they survived the winter and the whaling and they found their way back to Faxaflói Bay also this spring. White-beaked dolphins were sighting during 8 of our tours during the all month. A very nice encounter with them took place on 12th May when we followed a large group of dolphins which positively interacted with us by following us on the side and bow riding.
From 1st May to 31st May 2012 35 minke whales, 24 white-beaked dolphins were photographed and identified. Among them, 11 minke whales and 1 white-beaked dolphin have been already identified from previous years.

This first month of field work has been pretty amazing. With a lot of fish in the bay (mainly capelin) we had the unique chance after a couple of years to encounter on a regular basis the humpback whale, a species which has been pretty absent in the area since 2010. As soon as the food showed up many minke whales populated the bay. White-beaked dolphins were sighted during 11 tours this month and we were all very happy to see them again.
From 1st April to 30th April 2012 17 minke whales, 17 white-beaked dolphins and 15 humpback whales have been photographed and identified. Among them, 5 Minke whales and 4 white-beaked dolphins have been already identified from previous years.

This past months we have the great chance to be at sea and encountered so many of the whales and dolphins we know since we started our research project back in 2007. It was so emotional to see Chapel so many times in Faxaflói Bay, actively feeding, as much as it was great to recognize the small body of Bambi surfacing fast next to our boat! It is always a joy to see that some of the whales we know so well are back every year in Faxaflói Bay!!
The number of times we had white-beaked dolphins sighted during our tours increased a lot and very large groups, and most the times with younger ones, were seen passing through the Bay.
Precisely, from 5th August to 4th September 2011 39 Minke whales and 60 white-beaked dolphin have been photographed and identified. Among them, 12 Minke whales and 14 white-beaked dolphins have been already identified from previous years.

This past month weather has been amazing so the Faxaflói Cetacean Research team has spend a lot of time at sea collecting data. A lot of time it was possible to observed minke whales in large numbers in the bay, very close to coast. Most the time they would be observed actively surface feeding, rolling underwater, displaying ventral arcs, oblique lunges and always interacting with flocks of seabirds like gannets, gulls and auks.
Dolphins have been sighted a much larger amount of times compared to the other months and many times we would spot large groups with calves present. One time in particular a pod of dolphins was observed and followed for a while feeding on mackerel in association with plunge diving gannets. It was incredible!
Precisely, from 5th July to 4th August 2011 130 Minke whales and 29 white-beaked dolphin have been photographed and identified. Among them, 14 Minke whales and 9 white-beaked dolphins have been already identified from previous years.
